How to remove quake3 arena download?

after downloading quake 3 and installing it i wanted to remove the file but it tells me the file is being used by another person or program, i've even tried to delete it in safe mode with no sucess. i'ts an exe file on the desktop any help would be appreciated. running windows xp sp3
