Why is yahoo answers based on a point system?

Why is yahoo answers based on a point system? 5pts for a question, 2pts for an answer. I have more questions then answers. Based on this fact, Yahoo answers(for me) will cease to exist at a certain point. Can someone explain this pair of ducks(paradox) of sorts.
