If the Republicans believe so much in change, why didn't they change over the last eight years?

They've had plenty of opportunities to stand up to the Bush administration during the last 8 years, why didn't they do it? Why are they only saying they'll change now, during an election? They've shown total solidarity behind Bush for 8 years and when they lost their Congressional majority, they filibustered legislation at a record pace. Doesn't their sudden promise to change ring hollow after eight years of doing anything but? How can McCain call himself a maverick when he's supported Bush 90% of the time? If he and his party truly believed in change, wouldn't they have done it long ago? Isn't this just another example of Republicans saying and promising anything for votes?
